As the size of the model increased, a larger engine was also required to support the vehicle. Many V8 engines have been used in the Ford Thunderbird over the years. Within a few years, a second row was added, and the Ford Thunderbird is known for getting larger and large in size until the late 1970s. The car was originally designed as a sporty two-seat convertible but was not marketed as such. By the end of 2005, Ford had managed to produce over 4.4 million Thunderbirds. Production on the Ford Thunderbird occurred from 1955 to 1997 and then again from 2002 to 2005. This vehicle sparked the expansion of the market segment for personal luxury vehicles that feature a higher emphasis on driving comfort, rather than high-speed performance. Interesting Fact: The Ford Thunderbird is an upscale vehicle that featured eleven unique generations. This car, having a known history from new and being from Southern California in a dynamite color combination is that much more rare!! The air conditioning presently requires charging for it to blow cold. It has very little patina and would only be improved by continued detailing, use and maintenance. Of course this T-Bird has the sliding steering wheel which brings pleasure to anyone seeing it slide! The VIN is 2Y85Z130243. The car is fully optioned with air conditioning, heater, dealer supplied roadster-type tonneau cover, wire wheels, power steering, power brakes, power window, power seats, power convertible top, correct and original wire wheels, an aftermarket “Thunderbird” AM/FM cassette stereo, 390 cu in V-8 powered and new custom ordered Diamond Back radials. This motorcar has less than 3,600 miles since its full restoration. The car was sold to us many years ago having never had the top lowered (they didn’t want wrinkles to appear on the top!). They enjoyed the car for several years and over 2,000 miles. This example lives up to his reputation in every respect.Īfter several years the Gilroy’s completed the car. Again, Bud Gilroy is a highly regarded and experienced restorers of Thunderbirds. He used nothing but his hammers, blocks, sweat and heat. The bodywork was completed by a craftsman in Temecula that used absolutely no body filler. The car spent over one year on a rotisserie. He restored every single part of the car, down to the most minute detail. It had relatively low mileage however we do not recall the original, pre-restoration mileage. I personally saw the car before restoration and loved it then! It was in very nice orginal condition as only Southern California cars are. He bought the car in the early 1990’s and restored it for his wife to use. He lived up in the foothills in Lake Arrowhead.īud Gilroy bought the car from the Professor in the same colors as it appears today. He loved this car and fully optioned it with all the dealer installed Sports Roadster items. This car was bought new by a professor from the University of California, Riverside. This is a two prior owner California car that has undergone a no-expense spared rotisserie restoration by renowned Thunderbird restorer Bud Gilroy from Temecula, Ca.
